Book

I Can Make a Difference selected by Marian Wright Edelman
Illustrated by Barry Moser
HarperCollins/Amistad, 2004 112p. (all ages)

Stories, poems, songs, and quotes from a variety of cultures to let children know that they really can make a difference in the world.

Idea

Readers can identify how they can make a difference by identifying a verb to reflect something they can do for each letter of the word difference.

  • Deliver
  • Initiate
  • Find
  • Focus
  • Encourage
  • Relate
  • Endeavor
  • Notice
  • Care
  • Elicit

They then consider how they can incorporate these "make a difference" verbs into their lives.

Idea

Each of the 12 sections in this book identifies a way that kids can make a difference. Encourage readers to focus on one of the topics for each month in 2006. Keep a "difference calendar" to indicate how readers made a difference during each month.

Strategies for the following books are also included in the January/February/March issue
