Excerpt
Book
Creation by Gerald McDermott
Dutton, 2003 32p. (all ages)
A celebration of life and the creative spirit.
Idea
"I am all this. All this I am." The last line of this book can be the inspiration for your readers to indicate all that they are.
First, ask your readers to lie on a piece of butcher paper while another reader draws around their bodies. The students then glue pictures and objects onto their outline drawing that represent who they are. They can use magazine photos, their own drawings, and small objects to reflect what they do, what they believe, what makes them themselves.
Idea
The illustrator uses vibrant, rich colors to celebrate creativity in this book. Readers can identify the feelings they associate with different colors, and create paintings to identify their feelings with the appropriate colors. For example, if blues and purples make them feel cool and distant, they can paint a picture of a mountain with the cool colors.
Idea
Readers can describe something creative that they have done and the inspiration for that creativity. Encourage them to identify something someone else has done that was creative, and research to learn about the creative person and what might have inspired his/her creativity. Discuss the meaning and implications of creativity.
Strategies for the following books are also included in the January/February/March issue
