Book
She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain by Philemon Sturges
Illustrated by Ashley Wolff
Little, 2004 32p. (gr. K-4)
The folk song has a new twist, as the animals eagerly await the arrival of the librarian with the books.
Idea
The animals in this book are planning a party to celebrate the arrival of the books. Have a party in your classroom or library to celebrate all the great books that are available to read. Encourage readers to select a book worth celebrating.
They then make decorations, identify a craft, or develop a party game that is appropriate for the book in some way. For example, they might make a piñata to celebrate Mañana Iguana, make apple animals for Apples to Oregon, etc. Invite other readers to the party to celebrate the wonderful books available to read.
Idea
Encourage your readers to read several books and select the ones they like best to add to the "bookmobile", a wagon filled with books that they bring to the younger readers. They then describe the books in some way to the younger children to encourage them to check-out the books to read themselves. Readers may want to make posters, puppets, multimedia presentations, read excerpts, etc., to motivate the younger children to select the book.
Strategies for the following books are also included in the August/September/October issue
