Read Me a Story by Rosemary Wells
Hyperion, 2002 (story for grades K-2; concept for all ages)
Yoko knows how to read, but she doesn't want her teacher or her parents to know for fear that they will stop reading to her.
Idea
While readers need to read to themselves, it is important that they also hear a story read well and/or listen to the words in a poem. Resolve to read aloud to your readers every day. Set a reasonable goal, and keep a graph of the minutes spent reading aloud to keep you on track.
Idea
Encourage readers to identify books and stories that they have enjoyed hearing read aloud. Compile these favorites into a read aloud list to send home so that parents and others can continue the special time that happens when a book is shared aloud.
Idea
Read a wide variety of books aloud to your readers. This is an excellent way for them to be exposed to different genre or types of books. Be sure to include historical fiction, contemporary fiction, informational books, fantasy, and biography in your read aloud selections.
Strategies for the following books are also included in the January/February/March issue
