What About Me? by Ed Young
Philomel, 2002 (all ages)

A young boy is surprised at how he acquired knowledge in this Sufi tale of truth and wisdom.

Idea

Ask students to identify what they would like to learn. They then write what they think they must to do gain the knowledge they seek, identify each of the steps, and put them in sequential order. Combine their steps to knowledge into their own "What About Me?" books.

Idea

Students can identify the most important knowledge they have, and why it is so important. Encourage them to describe how they have used this knowledge, and how they gained / learned it.

Idea

Students can make a knowledge booklet. Ask them to identify a topic about which they have a particular interest. This can be a topic that will be studied during the year or one of personal interest; it can either be an academic topic or a recreational topic. Students then make a cover for their knowledge booklet that is related to their topic. Whenever they learn anything new about their topic, they put their new information into their knowledge booklet; they can write about their learning or draw a picture. The new knowledge can be recorded in the form of notes, sketches, or in a more formal presentation. At the end of the year, students can then review how much knowledge they have gained about a subject of interest.

Strategies for the following books are also included in the August/September/October issue
