Poetry Matters by Ralph Fletcher
HarperCollins, 2002 (gr. 3-7)
A book to help young writes learn about poems and how to identify the sounds they like.
Idea
Your students can make a poetry anthology on a specific subject. First they identify a subject that matters to them - e.g., sports, food, dogs, etc. Next, they identify a package that is appropriate for their subject - e.g., a sports package could be a gym bag, a dog package could be a dog food bowl, a food package could be a grocery bag. They then select a least five poems that matter to them about their subject, using a variety of poetry resources.
After they have selected their poems they copy each poem on an appropriate item made from construction paper to put into their subject package - e.g., sports poems can be written on appropriate sports equipment, dog poems can be written on dog bones, food poems can be written on food items . By making the items from construction paper, the students can make them large enough so they can copy the entire poem. Laminate the construction paper pieces for a display that will last. If the students hand copy the poem, they really think about why it matters as they write the words. Display the anthologies for others to read to see how the poetry matters.
