Book

Goin' Someplace Special by Patricia C. McKissack.
Illustrated by Jerry Pinkney.
Atheneum, 2001 (gr. 1-5)

The trip to "someplace special" is not easy, but it is worth the trip.

Idea

This is a season when many people are going "someplace special" to visit family and friends. Your readers can identify "someplace special" they like to visit, and why that place is so special. After reading this book, ask the question again to determine whether any other different / special places are described.

Students can then draw a picture of their special place and write a brief description as to why it is so special for a booklet entitled "Someplaces Special."

Idea

Readers can identify books that feature locations that were special to them. Combine the book titles and reasons why the setting was so special into a bibliography entitled "Someplaces Special."

Idea

Readers can write why their own library is a special place on blue ribbon-shaped pieces of construction paper. Post these blue-ribbon reasons in the library, so others can see why the library really is "someplace special."

Strategies for the following books are also included in the November/December issue
