Book! Book! Book! by Deborah Bruss.
Illustrated by Tiphanie Beeke.
Scholastic Press, 2001 (gr. K-4)
The animals on the farm are bored, so they go to the library to find something to do.
Idea
The animals were delighted by the books that the librarian gave to the hen. Your readers can make a list of books that they think would be enjoyed by each of the animals. For example:
- horse - King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry
- cow - The Cow That Wouldn't Come Down by Paul Brett Johnson
- goat - The Three Billy Goats Gruff
- pig - Pigs Might Fly by Dick King-Smith
- hen - Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins
- bullfrog - Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel
Encourage readers to indicate why each of the animals would like the book they've selected.
Idea
Your readers can do what the hen and the librarian have done in this story and recommend good books to others. Take photos of individual children holding a book that they especially like. Put their recommendations on a display entitled, Youll Be Delighted with These. You may want to add a few neighs, moos, and baas to the display as well as some animal pictures to connect more directly with this book.
Idea
Make an animal bar graph to show how much readers like particular books. When students read a book that they think is delightful, they list the book title on the left side of the graph, and put a picture of a horse, the first animal in Book! Book! Book! , next to the title. As other readers read these same books, they add another animal if they, too, thought the book was delightful. The books with the most animals on the book bar graph are the books that readers thought were most delightful.
Strategies for the following books are also included in the January/February/March issue
