Idea of the Month - 2010

January

The Top 10 of 2010

Happy New Year!  And yes, with the numerical connection, it is "mandatory" that your readers identify their Top Ten in 2010!

First of all, identify ten "genres" that are popular with your readers.  Some possibilities include:

     Fantasy

     Mystery

     Realistic contemporary fiction

     Science books

     Historical fiction

     Series

     Humorous books

     Animal fiction

     Graphic books

     History books

     Biography

     Poetry

     Fairy tales

Readers then pick their favorite books in each of their identified categories throughout the year.  At the end of the year, readers can suggest which of the books are the best of their type, which ones make the "Top Ten".  Post the ten picks in each category to encourage others to read these best books.

An alternative is for readers to identify their personal Top Ten, the ten best books of any type that they read during the year.  Remind them to explain why their selected books are so special.

These ideas are intended to help readers share what they have read and enjoyed with other readers. Sometimes the strategies also help readers select the books they want to read next. They are easy to implement and appropriate for a variety of ages. You will find a new idea posted each month; some are appropriate for the particular month, most are appropriate at any time. Don't forget to look at ideas from previous months to help motivate your readers.
